It’s 3 p.m. on Friday and your boss has already told you that you can head out early for the weekend.  You’re wrapping up a few items and planning to leave shortly when a coworker comes to you and asks you for some help with a project they’ve been working on.  Your first instinct is to say you’re sorry but you have plans and need to leave early for the weekend.  While that may get you a few extra minutes of weekend sunshine, you could be missing out on some valuable work experiences.

The wonderful thing about SHRM’s Annual Conference is that there is “something” for everyone.  The networking opportunities are endless; the speakers’ topics have a wide reach; and the Tuesday night concert always brings energy.

The SHRM Foundation sponsored an informational and fun orientation event for YPs and students attending this year’s SHRM Conference.  This was the first event of this type and it seemed to be a big hit!

Jeff Pon, SHRM’s Chief HR & Strategy Officer, started off the event by recognizing the 2015 Graduate and Undergraduate Case Competition Winners.  Temple University, East Undergraduate Division winner, was in attendance and received a large round of applause.  Jeff also recognized the Outstanding Merit Award winning chapters of which there were 28 this year!

You’ve found yourself in a new role with a new company and you’re excited to make a lasting mark within the organization.  You’ve been trained on about 100 new processes and procedures and have seen some areas for improvement.  Your trainer or new manager has mentioned the need for change but says they have been too busy and haven’t been able to make them.

As an HR professional, I have certain expectations for candidates when they come in to interview for a job, regardless of what that position is.  When preparing to be on the opposite side of the table as an interviewee, I try to make sure I am my own best candidate.  It can be difficult, however, knowing that my expectations of candidates are not shared by all HR professionals.
