December 2016

If you’re like me, the week between Christmas and New Year’s is the most inspiring time to set goals for the coming year. Perhaps it’s the lull in activity, or that it’s cold outside, or that I see January 1st as a endued with special powers to turn me from chronic procrastinator to achiever; when I’ll magically have enough willpower to go for a brisk morning walk and then sit down to write for an hour every day.

I asked a team of internal coaches, “What advice would you give aspiring coaches?” These are people who navigate traditional job responsibilities and coach employees as well.

I’ve been working with some of the team for a little over a year. Others have been part of the process for about six months. Many have been internal coaches for several years.

I asked them to reflect on their whole coaching experience and offer advice to internal coaches.

As 2016 winds down, it’s a great time to reflect on what has transpired over the last twelve months. It’s easy to step back and take sides to argue your point. What I was aiming at was broader and more holistic. I’m sure people had a mix of successes and setbacks. All of those experiences made up where you are today ready to jump into 2017.

What it really means to “manage up,” and how to do it effectively

December 27, 2016

I came across an article called The Rapid Rise of Robots Replacing Workers, written by Edwin Smith in Raconteur. Smith reports that in England a recent court decision has declared that Uber drivers are employees and not independent contractors. This is similar to many court decisions here in the United States. How does this play into the rise of robots replacing workers?

Why are some teams more effective than others? Why do some remain competitive over time while others don't?

The most successful teams are connected to a greater purpose, says Don Yaeger, author of Great Teams: 16 Things High-Performing Organizations Do Differently (Thomas Nelson, 2016).

Change is hard and can make us uncomfortable. That may be why 80 percent of New Year’s resolutions fail in the first week alone. But, change is upon us and it is here to stay.

Every year, the Oxford English Dictionary (OED) adds hundreds of new words. This year, they added the term “gender-fluid.”

For many employers, this time of year brings holiday parties, bonuses, good tidings, decorations, inclement weather, depression, drunkenness, and so much more.  So, here are just a few things no one else is going to warn you about.  Thank me with fruit cake later.

Employees shouldn’t have to fight for recognition. When an employee does something excellent, it should be acknowledged. “No news is good news” isn’t a recognition program. Organizations must also understand that, if employees only see the same one or two people being recognized, it can come across as favoritism.

Business is growing ever-complex: more vendors doing more things, shrinking company budgets, a workforce starving for opportunity and a quest to find what really matters to those you seek to recruit. There are consultants and technologies and process flows and hierarchies and interactive templates and places to be and people who want to be there.

The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) is fighting a court ruling that put new FLSA (Fair Labor Standards Act) overtime regulations on hold. Last month, a district court in Texas issued a nationwide preliminary injunction blocking the DOL’s final rule that sought to raise the required salary level to qualify for white collar exemptions.

Management advice for my younger self

In my early career, I was like many green, young managers—convinced I could do it all and determined to prove I could go it alone. Not surprisingly, I was mistaken. I recently asked some of the leaders I respect most about their own early career faux pas and what advice they wish someone had given them. The responses fell rather neatly into two categories.

In an era when the need for downtime is something many workers are loath to admit, let alone embrace, Silicon Valley author, lecturer and consultant Alex Soojung-Kim Pang has a compelling counterargument: Rest not only is essential to people's health and happiness, it also makes them more productive in the workplace.

Have you ever had a situation where you looked at some data and it confirmed what you thought? Or you were interviewing a candidate that belonged to the same sorority you belonged to and she was just as bright as you expected her to be? Or the millennial employee you have is just as spoiled as you expected them to be? If the answer to these questions is “yes”, you may be a victim of “confirmation bias.”

As the future of the US continues to take shape, daily developments tend to raise more questions than they answer. Historically, economists say that uncertainty is bad for the economy, but uber-successful investors like Warren Buffett say that fear and uncertainty present huge opportunities for investors. The truth is probably somewhere in between.

On December 1, the final Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) overtime rule was set to go into effect, but 10 days ago, a Texas district judge issued a preliminary injunction halting the rule. Although it is possible that the government’s appeal of the injunction could succeed, it’s more likely that any changes to the overtime rules will wait for the incoming administration.

Anyone who has searched for a job understands the tedious, time consuming process it requires. First, hunting for the job and interviewing. Then, negotiating, initiation and training for it.  In fact, the hiring process can often take several months. Often times, this is because management can’t or won’t make a decision and some of the job seekers move on to something else.
