According to 2015 research from SHRM, less than one percent of employers offer an Unlimited Vacation policy. So, I guess our company is now in the minority.

My last vacation of 2017 was pretty amazing. It was my very first real vacation that wasn’t over a weekend in the last two years. I can’t believe how much rest I got or how much I didn’t want to go back to work. Don’t get me wrong, I missed my job, and couldn’t wait to figure out what I’d missed, but taking a midweek vacation had to be my worst decision, lol.

We are coming into the vacation season. I am a big believer in vacations. I always came back fully recharged so I personally know the value of the R & R (rest and relaxation) and the ability to renew yourself.  So in this vacation season I wanted to give you seven tips on the value of vacations.

Many of us Americans don’t know how to take true summer breaks.

When you work at a global company, you likely know this anecdotally. You notice that colleagues based in cities ranging from Toronto to Berlin take at least two weeks, and sometimes a month. They also holiday at other times of they year, such as significant holidays.

SHRM, in collaboration with U.S. Travel Association, conducted a survey to examine HR professionals’ opinions about the importance of vacation. A large majority of HR professionals believe that when employees take vacation, it makes a positive impact on performance, morale, wellness, culture, productivity and retention. This study also looks at the amount of vacation offered to employees, rollover policies, and the number of unused vacation days.
