Immigration reform is filled with complexities.  Just to name a few are the politics, the body of law and policy and often the use of terms that only add confusion. During the 2007 immigration debate, I recall the term “clay pigeon” (a Senate floor procedure) confused even the experts.  Right now, the term that is turning heads is “Queen-of-the-Hill”. So why does it matter you ask? Well let me explain.

Last week President Trump outlined an ambitious agenda during his first State of the Union address. Meanwhile, lawmakers are wrapping-up their respective party retreats to set forth their legislative agendas.  Now the focus is on priority issues for the remainder of the 115th Congress, including many that will impact the workplace.

Most folks only get out to one and if lucky two conferences a year. Of course, the SHRM Annual each June is the granddaddy of them all and one that folks look forward to attending a year in advance. However, it’s not the only conference on the schedule and you have some great options to choose from, especially if you have an interest in one particular area of HR.

On Tuesday, January 30 at 9:00 pm ET President Donald Trump will deliver his first State of the Union address to the nation (SOTU). In his remarks, the President will address his public policy agenda, which will likely include key HR issues surrounding immigration reform and health care, among others. Future decisions made on these initiatives will impact you and your workplace and may affect the way you prepare for what’s ahead.

Inauguration Day is right around the corner and SHRM and our affiliate, the Council for Global Immigration will be there!  SHRM has participated in the last three election cycles, and we’ll be covering the Presidential Inauguration this week.

This past week, I had the opportunity to participate in something that still seems surreal. I spent a few days in Cleveland, Ohio during the Republican National Convention. It was an incredible spectacle, and it was hard to take it all in.
