I’ve mentioned in the past that I am fortunate to have amazing kids. They’re really adults now, and they’re still amazing !! I remember that when they were young they asked what I did for a living. When I told them that I was in Human Resources, they didn’t have a clue what that meant. It was difficult to explain employee relations, compensation, training and development, benefits and strategy. So, I simplified it for them.

Severance trust fund for employees ‘unprecedented,’ experts say

Human resources and labor law experts say Target Canada’s $70 million severance package for the approximately 17,600 employees the retailer is about to lay off is “unprecedented” and “unusual.”

Target Canada announced Jan. 15, 2015, it will shut all 133 stores across the country as it exits the Canadian retail market during the first half of the year.

Staffing experts familiar with Microsoft’s plan to lay off up to 18,000 employees generally agree on one thing: The reduction in force is necessary to make the company more agile and reduce duplication created by the acquisition of phone manufacturer Nokia.

But some experts take issue with the time frame set out by the Redmond, Wash.-based software behemoth: Microsoft will take up to one year to implement the layoffs, leaving many workers in extended professional and emotional limbo.

While planned layoffs fell to their lowest level in three months in September, U.S.-based employers announced plans to reduce payrolls by 40,289, according to the latest report on monthly job cuts, released Oct. 3, 2013, by global outplacement consultancy Challenger, Gray & Christmas Inc. That figure represents a 20 percent drop from August but is 19 percent higher than the job cuts announced in September 2012. This is the fourth consecutive month in which job cutting was heavier than a year ago.
