August 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans and devastated our city. I am the DHR for a hotel that employed over 1,000 people. Many employees stayed at the hotel through the storm to aid guests. Some left prior to the storm while others stayed at their homes. Once the city was completely evacutated, employees were scattered around the country. I headed to Memphis where we have a corporate office to join the company in their efforts to locate employees. My proudest moment was spending the first two weeks in September talking to employees and listening to the many harrowing stories they had to tell – being plucked off roofs by helicopters, spending days in the Houston Astrodome with thousands of others, losing everything to the flood waters or just desperately looking for loved ones. They needed a friendly familiar voice to comfort them. I was so proud of the employees, and indeed proud to have served them in their time of need. More than policies and programs, this is why I am proud to be an HR professional.
Recently, during general staff meeting in my organisation, I was a junior staff in the department of Administration & HR. All our leaders were craving for change in the organization but l stood up confidently in the midst of all staff to say that chnages can never exist without first change employee perspective. I stressed that, the CEO himself should try to to be close to all our staff on sites and commend thier efforts for development of the organization and that if all our technician can feel the speech of the CEO (motivation), they will be charged and moved. Istressed that he should listen to them and show passion to thier request. To my surprise, my comment was adopted by all the senior staff and the CEO. The Head, HR personally commended me for talking with passion for staff welfare & motivation. Due to this, for the first time in the history of the organisation – Cadwell Limited (Real Estates), Lagos Nigeria, a meeting between all technicians and cleaners on site was held and headed by our CEO. My name is now in the record book of the organisation that l was the one who influenced and initiate Quaterly On-site Staff meeting with CEO.
Recently, I was commended by World Most Respected Leadership expert -John C. Maxwell for my input in his recent bok titled ‘Everyone Communicate Few Connect’ for contributing my view in the publishing of the book. Please refer to page 252 of the book to see my name among the contributor of the book around the world – It was indeed a great honour l will never forget. It was indeed my Gold moment.
The achievement I am most proud of is having a career that I am passionate about, Human Resources. Every day presents fulfillment, each day ushers in an opportunity to help another and these soaring expectations makes me feels like an accomplished HR OLYMPIAN.
